I would definitely say you're a sophomore if you're going to be there for three years.
Recs are always helpful, but whether or not you really NEED them depends on the school. I would say that the only school that you might be applying to where they are absolutely 100 percent necessary (especially if you're a sophomore) is USC. Most of the other private California schools have much less cut-throat rushes and recs probably wouldn't be needed.
A good GPA and strong extracurriculars will definitely be helpful.
