Actually, that song has nothing to do with being discouraged and "keeping your head up" figuratively.

It means you must literally keep your head up.

Its about discouraging a certain "behavior."

I say go to the rush because that is your formal way of expressing definite interest. You just never know how it may work out, but at least you will know you gave it your best shot. Besides, there are African Americans who are not chosen to become members and they have expressed interest also.
