It isn't that bad, especially if you're out of it during the procedure. My ex got his taken out a long time ago, but he was just numbed up and not under anesthesia(sp?).
Definitely get them taken out if you've had braces. I had braces and didn't want my teeth to get messed up again. Plus you might get a prescription for drugs. hehe
