Wisdom Teeth question...
 

So, I can feel a wisdom tooth moving and starting to come in... how long do you think I could safely wait before scheduling an appointment with the Dentist of Doom?

The sooner the better! You don't want those teeth coming in, moving all your other teeth, and ruining your smile!

The procedure itself is honestly not that bad. You'll be ok.

wait until your next regular check up and talk to your dentist about it. he can tell you if your wisdom teeth will be a problem. there are a lot of people out there that do not have to get them out. my sister's wisdom teeth are fine. mine had to come out cause they pushed my teeth forward and i could not close my mouth all the way, nor could i chew. mine was an extreme case, cause i am stubborn about getting things done.

but yeah have your dentist do an xray and tell you how they are growing in

I agree....the sooner the better. And it really isn't that bad. You'll be swollen for a while, but other than that it is pretty easy.

I still have all of my wisdom teeth. What's the point of taking them out if they don't bother you?

Get them taken out. I had mine removed and I had very little swelling and no complications. The pain could be controlled by Ibuprofen and I was back to work the next day.

ETA- I had to get mine out because they were impacted. Obviously you don't need to get them out if they don't need to be removed.

exactly my point. talk your dentist first and see if they will even be a problem

Actually, it can still be good to get them out even if they're not causing immediate problems, if you're cavity-prone (like me). Wisdom teeth are more likely to get cavities in them, just because they're so far back in your mouth that they're hard to brush. In that situation, my dentist told me that the best thing is to just go ahead and take them out while you're young and can bounce back quicker in healing. They took my bottom 2 out as soon as they were fully erupted, and will do my top 2 whenever (if ever) they decide to come out.

But of course, your dentist will know best! :)


ETA: I got mine removed under local anesthetic only. I didn't feel any pain, just some strong tugging, and my recovery was really easy with no swelling or anything. I was back at work the next day. I guess I was lucky!

They can be pains if you've had braces or other dental work done.

It isn't that bad, especially if you're out of it during the procedure. My ex got his taken out a long time ago, but he was just numbed up and not under anesthesia(sp?).

Definitely get them taken out if you've had braces. I had braces and didn't want my teeth to get messed up again. Plus you might get a prescription for drugs. hehe

I had mine removed before they even came through the gums. My dentist said they were easiest to remove before they fully position themselves, so I suggest looking into the procedure asap if you're truly interested in getting them removed. If you do I suggest having them knock you totally out. I felt little pain during recovery.

Agreed with the braces/dental work already done....I had had braces and got my wisdom teeth pulled two years after my braces came off.

I also had the problem where the roots of my wisdom teeth were growing and tangling with the roots of my normal teeth, so those bad boys came out REALLY quick! Plus side: I got all four taken out at once by being "put under". Down side: I started waking up in the middle of the procedure and they had to give me a second dose of anesthesia, so I was COMPLETELY out of it for a couple of days after that! :)

I still have mine and they are NO problem at all!
