Asia, I have been to see nearly 40 operas. If your university holds "pre-opera" lectures, I would recommend that you check them out. As long as the lecturer is halfway decent, these lectures will help you to glean more from the experience, when you actually attend the opera performance - as to what the story is, what to look for in costumes, expressions of the singers, etc. If the opera house has "surtitles" (i.e. a little screen about the stage where the words are translated into English), this will help you to understand what the singers are singing (most operas are written in European languages - Italian, German, French...)
As long as the lecturer is good, I think this will be a good thing to check out.
If there are some operas to check out, I recommend the more well known ones: Carmen, Madame Butterfly, La Traviata, La Boheme, Don Giovanni, Rigoletto, etc. You are likely to "recognize" some of the music when you hear it in the performance.
