Opera

I want to talk to someone who has some knowledge of Opera. I was thinking of taking one on next semester, as my university holds "pre-opera lectures" -- it seems interesting. Email me.

Asia, I have been to see nearly 40 operas. If your university holds "pre-opera" lectures, I would recommend that you check them out. As long as the lecturer is halfway decent, these lectures will help you to glean more from the experience, when you actually attend the opera performance - as to what the story is, what to look for in costumes, expressions of the singers, etc. If the opera house has "surtitles" (i.e. a little screen about the stage where the words are translated into English), this will help you to understand what the singers are singing (most operas are written in European languages - Italian, German, French...)

As long as the lecturer is good, I think this will be a good thing to check out.

If there are some operas to check out, I recommend the more well known ones: Carmen, Madame Butterfly, La Traviata, La Boheme, Don Giovanni, Rigoletto, etc. You are likely to "recognize" some of the music when you hear it in the performance.

CutiePie gave some great advice. I would suggest attending the pre-opera lecture as well. Even if it's not good, you might be able to pick up at least 'something' in the process. I hope you have a good time!

For a fist opera go see one of the biggies like La Boheme or something else by Pucchini. The opera in New Orleans scrolls subtitle on top of the stage which helps me to follow along. Look for one that does that. Any music appreciation course helps give you a richer experience. Go for it!

Thanks for the advice. Those lectures were the reason I was going to attend. My actual question was, I wanted some reccommendations on which ones to try to catch or keep an eye out for, since at this point in my opera-ignorance, they are all the same to me.
