Personally, I think that the way this whole incident is being handled is making it more "traumatic" and "memorable" for children than it needs to be. On the most basic level it was 1 breast for 2 seconds. Maybe if parents simply explained to their kids that Janet's shirt accidentally came a loose, her breast was exposed, and a breast is a natural and beautiful part of every woman's body, they wouldn't be mesmorized by the whole incident. Now I'm not saying that parents should say it as "sappy" and "textbook" as I did, or that parents should be ok w/breasts or other body parts being shown on TV at all times of the day. However, I feel that calling this incident flith and disgusting makes kids think that there is something unnatural or wrong about the human body. Forgive me if I'm not being clear. Some experts feel that the US has higher rates for rape and sex crimes because sexuality and the human body are so "taboo", and because we aren't comfortable with them. Maybe if we teach our kids that the human body is natural and not worthy of headline news, we can change some deeper aspects of our society.
Ok, last thought I promise. Maybe our society is evloving, so that we are more comfortable with nudity and sexuality. For instance many parents were outraged when sex ed was 1st being introduced into the classroom. However, now most people feel that it is healthy for kids to learn about their bodies, their emotions, and how they change. Parents were also outraged when condoms were 1st given out in high schools and colleges. However, now most parents would prefer that their kids be safe from disease and unplanned pregnancy, which were already an issue for kids. Perhaps this is similar. I'm not suggesting that people should be totally nude on TV. However, maybe many people aren't outraged b/c they are becoming more comfortable with nudity and sexuality.
