Purple, Gold House Stirs Up Controversy
LAUDERHILL, Fla. -- A Lauderhill house, recently painted purple and gold, has residents in an uproar and a new law under consideration.
The house (pictured), located at 855 N.W. 49 St., is surrounded by homes that are painted more traditional pastel colors, and neighbors who are angry about the paint job have petitioned city hall to have something done about it.
Unlike several other South Florida cities, Lauderhill does not have color code, so the house's paint job is not violating any law.
The house's colors were reportedly chosen because Julius Ellington, the homeowner, is a member of Omega Psi Phi, and purple and gold are the fraternity's colors. The home was professionally painted, and Ellington says he has no plans to change the color scheme.
Tonight at 7 p.m., Lauderhill commissioners will vote on a law that would limit the colors homeowners can paint their homes.
Unhappy residents could still be looking at the purple and gold house for a while even if the law is passed. Homes that don't comply with the new color palette will be given a five-year grace period to be repainted.
