Surely I am not the only one who thinks that "Since when?" is not at all interchangeable with "When did that practice begin?"

"Since when?" means "You're full of BS, and I'm calling you on it."

You don't say "Since when?" when you are neutrally seeking information. It is a challenge. Which is fine, but there's no point pretending you just "asked a question" and HotDamn rolled her eyes out of nowhere.

It's not difficult to imagine that two different groups could independently come up with the call, "You knooooow!" If it were a unique phrase like "Skee-wee!" then you could assume it was borrowed, but you just can't make that assumption about "You knoooow!"
