NPC sororities with calls?
 

I remember a post a looong time ago where CutiePie2000 mentioned she found that Delta Gamma used to have a call.

I'm curious, do any of the other NPC have or used to have one? What is it? Why do you think it's not used?

I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you. ;)

What exactly is meant by "a call"? :confused:

We had a whistle. Well, I guess we actually have a whistle, ya know :)? Apparently, that was a normal thing in the late 1800s, so I'm guessing the other sororities at Barnard had the same tradition at that time.

I have no idea how common a call is among the Greek System.

Why do you think it's not used?

Perhaps b/c we are in a different era. I'm not saying in the 1800's-1900's, sorority women were more "refined";) , I'm just saying that we may use terms and sounds that would make our founders and older sisters blush, lol.


Also, it may depend on what activity is going on/about to happen when "the call" is made.

SK, i believe, has a call that isn't used anymore.

Probably most/all fraternities and sororities had whistles, claps, signals etc., at one point in time, and most still have them today - however, they are not used because of several reasons. One of them being that they have been handed down generation after generation after generation, and they have likely changed somewhat in their time. On top of that, who needs to give a mysterious whistle to find out who is a fellow Beta, when I can throw on my 6 inch block letter sweatshirt and advertise it to the world? We also have different ways to communicate, i.e. cell phones, two way radios...etc., that allow us to seek out fellow brothers/sisters.

I think the history with all organizations are pretty cool. Take for example how many Beta's separated by the North/South border in the civil war, wore their Beta badges on the brims of their hats, and during the war, their lives were spared by fellow Beta's (on the enemy side) because their brotherhood was recognized and was stronger than the war. I wonder how many whistled our call back then?

Don't get me wrong, I still whistle out our call when I am in the middle of the woods deer hunting, just in case a fellow Beta happens to be wandering 1/2 mile into the woods... ha ha:)

PS, next time you are at your national conventions or leadership conference, keep your ears open for strange whistles. When there are 1,000 Beta's in Miami, OH for our convention, people are whistling all the time; and its usually the 80-90 year old alumns.

I could be wrong, but if what I remember from my school is correct the historically black GLO's use their calls very much in the open. I remember the first time we I was at a Greek week event and they called for the DST's and the noise they made scared the crap out of me! But it was an amazing attention getter, I looked forward to it every time after that!! The same is true for the AKA and also the male orgs! The NPC and IFC all had cheers and such, but no 'calls'!
