No one ever said it would be easy. If it were would it be worth it.
I think it's important to think of them as people first. They are students just like you w/ similar concerns and problems. I suggest you find an opportunity to say hi. Then build on it. You know how girls chit chat about school and such. There's no need for a way in when you treat people as people. Yes they are a very critical group of people for you but don't let that prevent a casual hello or what's up.
Saying hi isn't the only way but it's a start. Remember: The squeaky wheel gets the oil.
