If you don't wear the silver often, keep is in a tightly sealed ziploc bag, this will help keep a lot of oxygen from getting to it and will slow down the chemical reaction that causes the tarnishing.

I wear silver almost every day (probably about the only time I wear gold is when I wear my KD pin/pendant). I usually dip it in some jewelry cleaner my mom has (bought at any store, nothing special)- gives it that extra sparkle. Be very careful of your stones though- as mentioned above you might ruin some stones (for example. i have to be very careful with my star sapphire ring- but it's made out of white gold so I don't need to clean it as often).

I have a polishing cloth that I use every now and then- these work best on chains and bracelets.
