Jewelry Cleaning
I have a bunch of silver jewelry but after a while (especially if I wear them in the pool or in the shower) they begin to look dull and tarnished. One of the reasons why I prefer white gold over silver but whatever.......
Are there any products out there that clean silver jewelry (and cheap)? |
Yeah, go to any jeweler, or even Target or Wal-Mart. There is a liquid jewelry cleaner you can buy for like $5. You insert your jewelry for about 15 seconds, brush, rinse, and you are good to go. I actually did that this morning. :) There are also cloths, but the liquid cleaner is so much easier, quicker, and not as messy as the cloth. With the cloth, the dirt from the jewelry will stay on the cloth and get on your hands every time you use the cloth. You don't want black hands.

I didn't think that type of jewelry cleaner worked on silver. Make sure you read the instructions to see if it'll work on your type of jewelry. Some of the chemicals don't react well with certain types of stones and metals, and I know you'd hate to ruin your stuff. So double check just to make sure :)

Don't wear jewelry of any kind in the shower, ocean, pool, or while doing housework. That will help prevent this from happening. Once tarnish occurs, I use silver polish, the same type that is used on silverware. You need to be careful not to overuse it.

If you don't wear the silver often, keep is in a tightly sealed ziploc bag, this will help keep a lot of oxygen from getting to it and will slow down the chemical reaction that causes the tarnishing.
I wear silver almost every day (probably about the only time I wear gold is when I wear my KD pin/pendant). I usually dip it in some jewelry cleaner my mom has (bought at any store, nothing special)- gives it that extra sparkle. Be very careful of your stones though- as mentioned above you might ruin some stones (for example. i have to be very careful with my star sapphire ring- but it's made out of white gold so I don't need to clean it as often). I have a polishing cloth that I use every now and then- these work best on chains and bracelets. |
