Did this also apply at some Southern institutions?

Well, I once read many years ago where "Sugar" Shaquille O'Neal had his basketball scholarship threatened by Dale Brown (his LSU coach) if he pursued undergraduate fraternity membership.
Louisiana people, am I correct?
