I do not condone hazing. My rule of thumb though is that if you would continue doing it if the University President, the National President of the Fraternity (or Sorority) and the editor of the school newspaper (who has a camera) show up, then it isn't hazing. And in that respect, I guess that I do have a sliding scale because the schools and the fraternities have changed. When my parents got to college, freshman men were required by the schools to wear beanies, and these days, for any group to require that would probably be viewed as hazing. I occasionally have problems with some of the things banned by FIPG, but to reference another thread, I think that N2's chapter probably should be nailed for hazing.
By "pure" physical abuse, I meant "human powered". Though there is crossover between the BB-gun and the NPHC hazing incident with the brothers trying to make the pledges skin darker with an Iron.
I am in a service fraternity (Alpha Phi Omega). Our chapters do have a pledging program (six to ten weeks) and are not housed. Members of Social Greeks and non-members are equally welcome. Our fraternity has had charters revoked due to hazing. I pledged in Fall of 1986, graduated in Fall of 1990 and have been on alumni staff in the Washington DC metropolitan area for the last 10 years.
I'll be happy to answer any other questions
