If you call one of the three major credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax and something else... Trans something...) and say you suspect credit fraud, by law they have to give you one for free (one per year).

I had someone assume my credit identity and it was a hairy mess! Someone even came to my office and tried to prepossess my (her) car! Luckily I was able to prove pretty quickly that who I was and that I wasn't driving the car in question. But how embarrassing! I’d just started a new job – my new co-workers didn’t know what to think! I was told I should check it once a year for the rest of my life -- and I will! I had no idea it was even going on until I tried to rent an apartment and some wacky stuff came up on my report.
