Shine - most if not all sororities have a stipulation in their chapter bylaws stating that you must live in the house for x semesters/years (depends on size of house, campus housing contracts etc). Some sororities (PSS and DDD are two I know of) state in their national policies that if there is housing space available it must be filled. Commuters and res life staff are the exceptions. It's just part of your responsibility to the sorority - if you don't want to fulfill it, you shouldn't join.
