Moving out Policy
 

Do you guys have rules on members moving out? Like, if somebody decides to move out, what does your chapter do?

We passed a new rule of moving out earlier this semester, so that if you have to complete at least 6 semester living in the house ... if you "break" the contract, the fine is $250 and out of house due. Of course there is "under special circumstances, this rule does not apply", meaning co-op, internship, study abroad, drop out college.
Personally I don't think this would work.

Any inputs?

I think 6 semesters is a bit long, since at least here you can't move out of dorms untill soph. year. Make it so that after pledging you HAVE to live in house.

We have different policy on freshmen. They can live in the house the first year.

My sorority had two girls move out this year-- they still have to pay rent since no one is taking over their spot. SO they are paying rent for two places. The one moved out and deactivated bc she said it was too much like high school(my house). I don't really know what is going on since I am now out of state,but my lil sis keeps me up to date.
Anyway since freshman our required to live on campus their first year they don't live in the house, but everyone is suppossed to live in the house for one school year and if you are on exec you need to live in the house at least one semester of your term of duty. We have to beg people to live in our house.

Wow, I think that's kinda crappy. I wouldn't like to feel roped into living somewhere. I think the idea of sorority houses and living with sisters is amazing...but to have to pay NOT to live there???

Shine- in response to your comment-- anyone who moves into the house signs a contract-- it is legally binding. The new house mom was on housing corp and worked at a law office that helped make the contract. So it wasn't like we just signed our names on a list. Even the on campus apt I live in at my new university have housing contracts and you can't break them unless you get married, kicked out of school, or withdraw from school. Yeah it sucks that they are paying for two spots though. It is really weird to have a sister be terminated and still living in the house which happened last yr-- bc everytime we had a sisterhood, or a ceremony she wasn't allowed to be around.

Shine - most if not all sororities have a stipulation in their chapter bylaws stating that you must live in the house for x semesters/years (depends on size of house, campus housing contracts etc). Some sororities (PSS and DDD are two I know of) state in their national policies that if there is housing space available it must be filled. Commuters and res life staff are the exceptions. It's just part of your responsibility to the sorority - if you don't want to fulfill it, you shouldn't join.

Don't worry, I don't plan on joining another sorority anytime soon. LOL

But this is all really fascinating to me. I never had a house in my sorority, so I didn't go through any of this.

I'm not saying it's bad or wrong, just interesting.
