It's been like that from the very beginning. It gives each chapter the ability to build their own identity- just like each chapter has a unique submotto.

I believe the Penn State chapter is named in honor of someone as well. However I cannot find the reference to confirm that.

Penn State (Epsilon Alpha) was named for Edith Anderson, who was instrumental in brings AOII to Penn State.

AOII chapter at Auburn was also named for the woman who helped establish that chapter (Delta Delta for Dorothy D something). the chapter at Shippensburg (PA) was also named that way, Tau Lambda for Terri Lewandowski).

Delta Delta took then-international president Dorothy Dean's initials.
