Chapters named after people?
 

I only know of two Greek Letter Organizations that name their chapters after people.

*Phi Delta Phi - which names their "Inns" after Lawyers, so for example, the Inn at University of Alabama is Edward deGraffenried Inn. (Most just list the last name, so it isn't obvious who the person is)

*Alpha Rho Chi - which names its chapters after Ancient Greek, Roman or Egyptian Architects.

Does anyone know of any others?

Delta Theta Phi, Law Fraternity call their chapters Senates. Each senate is named after a judge.

This is fascinating!

There's a high school group called the National Spanish Honor Society. For many years, your chapter name had to be one of a famous Hispanic person. Now there are hundreds of chapters so they've allowed the new chapters to use Spanish nouns to name themselves. It got really hard with the famous names because not even HQ could think of names that hadn't been used.

As far as I know, we are not able to do this for our collegiate chapters, but we have more leeway with our alumnae chapters. Our San Antonio Alumnae Chapter is named in honor of Virginia Stark, a sister who remained active until she passed away at 102 years old.

This isn't an exact match for what is being asked, but may be worth knowing for understanding how some AOII collegiate chapter greek names are chosen.

Many of you know AOII does not sequentially name their collegiate chapters [alpha, then beta, gamma, etc NOT DONE]. I'm not sure why that started.

But I do know their Phi Chi chapter at the University of Chicago used the initials of a very active and involved AOII named Peg Crawford, who worked at UC, when they chose their chapter name.

There are other AOII chapters that took the name- initials of beloved/important AOII members and worked those initials into their greek letter chapter name. Can any GC AOII help me list a few more?

Oh that's right, the AOII chapters aren't named in any order like the rest of ours, they choose chapter names that stand for something special to them. A bunch of the AOIIs were discussing it here years ago.

Our Beta Zeta chapter at Kennesaw State is named for Barb Zipperian, who is a Past International President. I believe she was IP when they were installed, but am not 100% on that.

It's been like that from the very beginning. It gives each chapter the ability to build their own identity- just like each chapter has a unique submotto.

I believe the Penn State chapter is named in honor of someone as well. However I cannot find the reference to confirm that.

Penn State (Epsilon Alpha) was named for Edith Anderson, who was instrumental in brings AOII to Penn State.

AOII chapter at Auburn was also named for the woman who helped establish that chapter (Delta Delta for Dorothy D something). the chapter at Shippensburg (PA) was also named that way, Tau Lambda for Terri Lewandowski).

Delta Delta took then-international president Dorothy Dean's initials.
