I would say that Virginia is more of a southern state, especially when compared with Maryland or DC. From Northern Virginia you do not have to drive very far west or south to reach the countryside, and rural areas. It is beautiful. Once you reach the southern or central parts of the state, you can see why it would be considered part of the south. That's why I love Northern VA---it's far enough North that if you want to go to the Northeast, it isn't too much of a trip, and if you want to go South, it REALLY doesn't take very long
