Do you consider the DC area the south?
 

I get in this big friendly argument on whether I live in the south. I consider DC and the surrounding area the south. Technically we are below the Mason-Dixon line. Another reason I consider DC the south because most of the people that live here are from the deep south. For example my mom is from Alabama and my dad is from South Carolina. What are your thoughts?

I don't consider DC to be the South... Southern states, to me, are the following:

Georgia
Alabama
Arkansas
Louisiana
Texas
Mississippi
South Carolina
Tennessee
Kentucky
Florida (even though Florida really doesn't count in my book anymore -- too many Northern transplants down there nowadays) :D

So no Virginia DZrose? Would you consider DC, Maryland, and Virginia to be the north?

DZ Rose, you left out North Carolina... I don't really think that Virginia, West Virginia, DC, and Maryland are southern, but some people down here do. I think that's kind of the beauty of those states... you can claim either way... wheras I, being from South Carolina and Georgia, and DEFINITELY a southern girl!

Yeah Carolina, I think it gets really fuzzy around the midatlantic. I would call southerm virginia to be southern, cause it is. However, I could see how northern viginia could be more northern.

Remember, Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy. So I would definitely have to consider Virginia a southern state.

I have no idea why, but when I think DC, I think northeast. This is coming from a Texan gal. Go figure! :D J/K

I definitely consider DC and Maryland to be Northern states... Virginia is borderline... Even though it was definitely a Confederate state during the War, I have a problem thinking of it as a Southern state nowadays. That's just me, though! :)

Also, I left out North Carolina on purpose. The "North" in the name is what strikes it from my list. :D I know it's considered to be part of the South, but I just can't seem to get past the name. LOL

I would say that Virginia is more of a southern state, especially when compared with Maryland or DC. From Northern Virginia you do not have to drive very far west or south to reach the countryside, and rural areas. It is beautiful. Once you reach the southern or central parts of the state, you can see why it would be considered part of the south. That's why I love Northern VA---it's far enough North that if you want to go to the Northeast, it isn't too much of a trip, and if you want to go South, it REALLY doesn't take very long :)
