So please note - in the interest of accuracy - there is a police report, it JUST DOESN'T LIST THE SUPPOSEDLY STOLEN BADGES.

I've been eating popcorn and enjoying the show, but that makes me go "hmmm...."
Seriously, the police always ask for an inventory of jewelry and other small, pawnable items. They take the inventories of stolen goods around to pawn stores on a regular basis and have the pawn store owners check the list. It's SOP.
The insurance company also always wants a complete inventory for their purposes and wants you to give it to the police, so the police can try to recover the items.
The police also don't write the inventory for you, typically. You write an inventory and they attach it to the report.
