My daughter has all her own bedding. They choose their beds/sleeping dorm with a point system. With more points, you get higher pick My daughter loves the sleeping dorm. After this semester most changed their room since girls move in and out. Now she shares her "study/hang out/dressing room with different girls this semester……such a great way to get to know a new batch of girls.

Getting back to living in….
It seems like, in my experience with my girls, living in is a privilege reserved for sophomores and juniors with enough points to live in the house. My daughter did a ton of community service in and out of her sorority to get enough points to live in. Participation in sorority events (not including any social events) was most important and quite frankly, a great way to get to know her fellow sisters. It also led to a lot of community service campus wide, since involvement in other campus service projects upped the girl's points too. Personally, I love this environment that encourages campus wide involvement and friendships and commitments outside your particular sorority. Based on what I've read, it doesn't seem like IU is very much into that philosophy and it make the exclusionary environment even worse.

No one in her house lives in senior year. They all get apartments or houses with their closer friends.

I mean my daughter's friends know I'm a teacher and so did many girls in the sororities. During recruitment, she was asked what her parents did, what kind of car she drove and where she vacations. I don't know if it was "research" or not, but I choose to believe it was polite conversation.
This...and also, if anyone she knew from high school was in a sorority, they would know her background. IU is a big school, but a small place.

And arguing another point, why WOULDN'T someone use every weapon in the arsenal. I mean, I've known some unknown musicians who ran their business this way instead of using family connections. You'll never hear of them because they didn't use the one thing that would make a difference. If famous parents would have made her memorable in that VAST pool of qualified girls, then I don't feel much sympathy. If it was her only outstanding quality it wouldn't have changed the outcome anyway. This is the Midwest after all.

Comment from npc

Response from NPC from sororityparents.com on this year's outrage over IU recruitment. Glad to see that they specifically mention that they and some of the nationals have asked them to move to a traditional quota system.

npc - 01/24/14 @ 11:43 am
We appreciate the thoughts and concerns and suggestions expressed regarding the Indiana University (IU) recruitment process.

Please know that the Indiana University (IU) Panhellenic operates a unique system in the determination of quota for each of the 21 NPC members groups represented on the campus. Each of the 19 housed chapters sets its own quota, based upon the number of projected open bed spaces for the next academic year. It is the ONLY campus in the United States that remains on this system. For the two unhoused chapters, their quota is determined based upon preferred size for operation and being comparable in total chapter size to the other chapters on campus.

It is a long-held belief of collegiate and alumnae sorority members of this university community that the experience of living together in a chapter house for three years is critical to one’s overall sorority experience; hence this practice remains in place, in spite of continued requests from the inter/national organizations and the National Panhellenic Conference for the chapters to move to a true quota/total system. Several, but not all chapters have instituted a live-out policy for a limited number of senior members, but unfortunately these waivers and policies are not sufficient enough to meet the demand of the number of women wanting to join each year.

NPC continues to work with the collegiate and alumnae members of chapters in this system on this process and the overwhelming hurt caused by not opening up the system to meet the interest expressed by unaffiliated women on this campus. Because recruitment is a mutual selection process, not every woman expressing interest in the system may receive a bid. However, if the campus would use the traditional quota/total system, there certainly would be an increased opportunity for the placement of more women.

Additionally, in an effort to assist with placement of interested women in sorority membership a third unhoused sorority will be colonizing on the campus this academic term — Delta Phi Epsilon. Women who do not receive a bid during the recruitment process will be eligible to participate in the colony recruitment process of Delta Phi Epsilon. The dates of its recruitment are January 22-29. Please contact Melissa Riley at Mreilly@dphie.org for more information about DPhiE recruitment.

Please know that NPC continues to have discussions with leaders of the Panhellenic and local alumnae about this situation and will continue to try to find ways to improve this process. We encourage you to express your specific concerns and comments directly to the Indiana University Panhellenic at iupharec@gmail.com.

But with the numbers that went through this year, I'm not sure that even if they added all of the rest with similar sized houses that everyone would have gotten a bid.

Alpha Sigma Tau is the 4th that is not represented at IU.

I didn't even realize we had presented. Interesting.

Do we think that all 26 will one day be at IU? If so, how long will it take, assuming the bed quota system doesn't change?

Sororities

My daughter was one of the casualties of rush. She showed up early to participate in rush under the most undesirable weather conditions, visiting house after house in freezing weather . She had three preference invites for the last round but ended up bid less. She was crushed and curled up in a ball crying while her friends were posting pics and tweeting about what sorority they were in and how happy they were.
She also had two legacies .
She found out today that a girl who did not go thru recruitment was offered , and accepted, a snap bid from one of the sororities. She had no excuse for not going thru rush , she just didn't want to Rush at the time . This is so unfair to all the girls who put in hours after hours during a very long recruitment. Not to mention the fee they all paid for Rush. Is this process of taking a girl who didn't Rush even allowed?
As a mom, I am horrified at how the bed quota is allowed to exist at IU. Wonderful young women are being crushed . This unfair system is brutal on our children.
I sent my daughter to IU for growth and gain. Never once did I imagine it would
Rip my daughters self confidence right out from under her. Come on IU - make this right! After all, this is happening on your University.

No. You would have needed to go through recruitment to be offered a snap bid. Are you sure it was a Snap and not COB?

Snap bids are bid given out immediately after bid matching and up until 24 hours after bid matching to girls who went through recruitment, but did not match with a chapter.

COB is continuous open bidding what most people call informal recruitment. Chapters who did not make quota or are under campus total can offer bids to either reach quota or total. I thought was there would be no COB until after DPhiE had concluded it's recruitment on the 29th.

My daughter knows of two girls who have been approached (both by the same sorority). One was asked to join yesterday, the other today. I am unsure if they were a snap bid or a cob but I was under the impression that cob would not begin until after the DPhie had finished their recruitment.

Can someone explain the requirements to participate in COB? Can someone who rushed and did not list all the sororities she was invited to for 3 party participate? What about someone who withdrew and did not fill out a bid card at all?

From what I recall being a recruitment advisor, any women in good standing with the university, taking a full course load, and having the required GPA are eligible for COB even if they did not participate in formal recruitment. The only exceptions are women who went through formal recruitment, signed a bid card and then DECLINED a bid if offered.

Why would a sorority not pick a woman who went through all the trouble to rush over someone who didn't even go through recruitment. That really is allowed? Very disappointing .
