@ amIblue? Most people are clueless regarding the doctrine of other religions. If they took the time to learn about other religions they would find many similarities with their own religion. I think we've discussed this before on GC (religions started off as cults and can still be perceived as cults; humans are a trip and will use religion to justify their ignorance). Christianity is not the only religion that supposedly perceives homosexuality negatively. I disagree with all religions regarding many things and those many things are the ties that bind different religions.

I agree with you that there are many similarities among religions; I just couldn't figure out how the Muslims got singled out (in all caps) in this conversation and what exactly they had to do with Duck Dynasty. I found the train of thought sad and mind blowing.
Actually, I do know because there is a large contingent in this area who are hell bent on trying to run a decades old established mosque out of town, so I think the thinking is that if LIBERALS (again all caps) are okay with MUSLIMS (all caps) hating on homosexuality (because of course) then LIBERALS ought to be okay with CHRISTIANS (all caps) hating on homosexuality.

This guy is a complete dumbass. Scroll down the article to what he said about Black people. As one commenter said, this idiot doesn't get the point that the Blacks were always the workers and never (extremely rare) the owners of the land. The poor white workers were working alongside the Blacks because of social class whereas the Blacks were working because of an intersection of social class and race. And there were still racial divides. The poor whites weren't allies with Blacks. Some of the poor whites eventually owned their own land (more likely to do so than Blacks). The poor whites worked their own land thus physically developing the "red necks". The poor whites often found Blacks and other underprivileged nonwhites to work the land.
He also doesn't understand the history of Negro Spirituals and singing while working, in general. Slaves around the world, laborers, and prison inmates historically and presently sing while working and during "leisure time". That doesn't mean they are happy and well treated, dumbass.
I now believe the Duck Dynasty family is a bunch of Bible thumpers who have escaped criticism because they appealed to the American Dream and poor-turned-rich sensibility. I appreciate their expressions of faith but I doubt this dumbass is the only one in that family who holds these ideologies.
This guy has a right to an opinion and to run his mouth. Those of us who disagree have a right to respond and to boycott the show if we choose. Suspending him from the show will not keep me from boycotting the show.

Apparently he doesn't like gay people either...

It's pretty offensive, the things he says in the name of "Christianity."

This controversy and suspension happened because of what he said about homosexuality. That's why I bumped this thread.
What he said about Blacks has received much less attention because his comments are considered cluelessly ignorant but not prejudiced.

1) Why politicians feel a need to publicly respond to this, I don't know.
2) It makes me sad that they don't even know that Freedom of Speech protects you from government, not from A&E firing your a$$ because you're a loud-mouthed bigot.
Quote:
“I don’t agree with quite a bit of stuff I read in magazine interviews or see on TV.* In fact, come to think of it, I find a good bit of it offensive,” Jindal said. “But I also acknowledge that this is a free country and everyone is entitled to express their views.* In fact, I remember when TV networks believed in the First Amendment. It is a messed up situation when Miley Cyrus gets a laugh, and Phil Robertson gets suspended.”
......
Former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin expressed her support for Robertson in a Facebook post.
“Free speech is an endangered species. Those “intolerants” hatin’ and taking on the Duck Dynasty patriarch for voicing his personal opinion are taking on all of us,” she said.

So apparently Jindal believes we have a Constitutional right to a show on A&E.. wish I knew that before I spent all that time in college.

Although I don't agree with his opinion, I do agree that yes he does have the right to say what he wants.
But I feel like people forget that while yes you can say your opinion, expect ANY type of backlash. Whether of course you agree with it or not.

And this issue isn't really about Freedom of Speech. There is so much embedded in this that they are hiding behind Freedom of Speech.
The people who keep crying Freedom of Speech in these situations are typically hypocrites with more socially conservative viewpoints (conservatives are the ones rallying behind Duck Dynasty) who want people to be punished when something is said that offends their sensibilities. Most of them rarely cry Freedom of Speech when someone expresses a perceivably negative yet honest (and sometimes accurate) opinion of something they hold dear like Christianity, for example. They see themselves as spreading "the gospel" under Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion because they falsely believe this is a conservative Christian country and they hold THE TRUTH (not just opinions). Everyone else with viewpoints are heathens flapping in the wind and that includes other Christians whose different viewpoints aren't "real Christianity."

Being that I am originally from Louisiana and went to college in Duck Dynasty territory, you can only imagine what my FB wall looks like right now. :roll eyes: Anyway, I can across this blog post that I thought was a must read for anyone that was indignant about Phil having his "First amendment rights trampled because he was just telling the Truth!" I try to divorce the horrible opinions being spouted from the people. I try. Anyway, give it a read.

Thanks for that good article.
Of course the comments section is funny. I dislike it when people say "she/he who is without sin cast the first stone." I especially dislike that phrase from people who think they are supporting the rights of marginalized people. No, you're not protecting homosexuals with that phrase. You are equating homosexuality with sin and telling people not to judge.

I love how the one comment aid it was obvious the author of the blog hadn't read the First Amendment, yet had no idea what the First Amendment actually said. Also, why are the group that are normally so for the free market and letting corporations making their own decisions so angry about what a private corporation did? There was one comment how this was activism and not the free market. But aren't the two fairly closely related?

The funniest part of all this is how people think the programming executives at A & E actually watch, enjoy, or relate to the current programming on A & E.
