In a few hours, there will be a peaceful march in my city and I plan to attend. The "point" of my attendance is to continue to call attention to this situation. Trayvon's death and the subsequent verdict highlights some grave flaws in the legal system and the conversation about these flaws should continue even if the criminal case is over (for now). The same thing has happened and continues to happen to American citizens both in and out of Florida. Personally, standing with my friends and loved ones to send a call for change on state and federal level (where it matters) also abates my feelings of helplessness.

To that point, the main thing I hope to accomplish by participating in the march is to motivate citizens to review the laws in their state and call for changes where those laws have not historically been interpreted and/or applied fairly to everyone. This is a message that needs to reach as many as possible and a march will gain the publicity to make that happen.

Lastly, while it is not the main intention for going, I hope that Trayvon's mother and father will see this and know we stand with this family. That day is likely the most awful day of their lives and no amount of protests or even a change in verdict can bring their boy back but I hope it offers SOMETHING for their heartache to know that we stand in remembrance of their baby.
