I don't think this is a problem in the very first years. If parents want people to "shower" them with gender-neutral toys, clothing, etc., I think that's fine. Once they are old enough to start socializing with peers, though, there's a whole new set of problems. Other toddlers classify people as "boy" or "girl", and the inability to do so may cause them to shun the child.
