Exactly. I haven't even seen anything on the BBC which is where I would expect it to be as she was much bigger there than she was here. PhoenixAzul might be able to fill us in on that if she pops in.

Its not been front page news over here due to the Norway Massacre, but it has definately been covered by all the channels and newspapers since she was found.
I agree that like most people, I could see it coming, Amy had been given so many chances to get clean, but she just couldn't shake off her demons.
However, when anybody passes, its a very sad occasion, and for the haters, please don't forget that Amy has family and friends that she has left behind.
BBC has just mentioned on the 6am news that her autopsy will be performed today, and that Amy's songs/albums have rocketed back up the itunes chart.
She, like the other members of the 27 club, had a great talent, which will be very much missed by her fans around the world. Hopefully after such a troubled life, she will now be able to rest in peace...

This is exactly what I was going to say. People can be sad about more than one thing at a time--we humans are all complex and stuff like that. Having a thread about this doesn't mean no one cares about those in Norway. It means thoughts and prayers for them are over in the Norway thread.
Funny how people can rant about seeing no respect for another's opinions yet they have no respect for another's death. One is not an idiot for having a different opinion but one is surely an idiot for essentially saying "I took all of this time and effort to come tell you this isn't worth my time and effort." I seriously hope none of these people post on here that their mother died and get the response, "Screw your mom, we're in a budget crisis."

Why do I have a feeling that if this was someone who wasn't a mess because of drugs, everyone would have just come in here and said, "RIP Amy," and left it at that?

This is exactly the example I was going to use after reading through the first of these ridiculous comments. If Michael Jackson died yesterday, I'm pretty sure no one would have come into a thread about his death saying, "This doesn't matter!!! Pay attention to Norway!!!!!!!!"

Exactly. And you know that if it was THEIR family member who was on drugs and died, they wouldn't be singing the same tune.

I wouldn't be surprised if it weren't an overdose so much as her body just giving out. There were reports several years back that she was already in the early stages of emphysema from chain-smoking and using crack. Not to mention her liver was probably ruined from drinking.

The tragedy of Amy Winehouse's death is that she had such talent, she had a support group of people who were willing to help her keep clean, and she couldn't find her way out of the drug of the week club. This whole "27 Club" only glamorizes the whole junkie ordeal, IMHO. And I've dealt with too many junkies to see anything remotely glamorous about it.
I wish her family a world of peace.

I don't think the "27 Club" is being presented as glamorous or some musician rite of passage. There are similarities between the deaths of these people in that they 1) were musicians, 2) died at the age of 27, and 3) most of them had drugs or alcohol involved.
There is also a list of "27 Club" that includes people who are not documented as having drugs and alcohols involved.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/27_Club
If anything glamorizes being a junkie it is how the media and general public receive musicians who are alleged or known junkies. Many of these musicians don't hide their substance use/abuse (i.e., Amy Winehouse did concerts and appeared on camera when she was on drugs). Being a musician, in general, has been made synonymous with living a hard life and using substances for longer than any of us have been alive. As for today's musicians, I think I posted the link of the alleged junkie tendencies of artists like Bruno Mars and Lil Wayne.

Who's glamorizing it? I haven't heard anyone glamorizing it, if anything it makes this whole thing a little more tragic. The first time I heard anything about this being a club was when Kurt Cobain died. His mother said, "I told him not to go join that stupid club."

I initially thought the same thing but I think he's clear that this is all speculation.

I wasn't sure of the origin. I have heard junkies reach 28 and bemoan that they're too old for the club, though.
FWIW, there used to be a hotel next to my (street level) office. So many junkies would accidentally stumble into our office, it wasn't even funny. Especially when they'd pass out, and when we called the paramedics, they were less than thrilled to even touch them. I learned a lot from that, and am SO glad that place sold.
