The ever popular "OMG 8000 girls started rush and only 500 got bids."
This is most likely because 1) girls were cut for not meeting the minimum GPA and 2) girls didn't keep open minds and dropped out of rush when they were cut by their "favorite."
It is NOT because 8000 girls went to pref parties and the sorority members tapped a keg afterwards and had a jolly old time cutting 7500 of them.
Any sorority member who repeats this myth is just trying to make herself and the Greek system look more "elite."

Urban Legends I've heard at the 3 schools I've helped out here in California:
During house tours, if you're taken on a tour of the house in a group of 2-3 girls, it's b/c they like you and want to make it a personal experience & you're almost guaranteed a bid to that house. On the flip side, if you're having a house tour with more than 4 girls (which happens 90% of the time due to numbers), then don't bother returning b/c they're going to cut you.
Rho Chi Urban Legend heard here at UCR which had me laughing my butt off b/c it's the more ridiculous and stupid one I've ever heard in my life:
If your Rho Chi is blonde, she's definitely a member of XXX sorority. No questions about it!
If your Rho Chi is brunette, she's definitely a YYY sorority sister.

"If you carry a big bag, XYZ will cut you"
(Then post recruitment)
"The only reason I got cut from XYZ is because I carried a big bag"
Also - "I didn't get into my top houses so I am going to drop and just COB... no really, they all hold spots for COB girls"
- This one is kind of sad because some girls drop and the house they "know will COB" isn't... and they aren't in any chapter

When in undergrad, I heard a lot of:
"Well, I'm just going to drop out and wait for informal. I heard that informal is WAY easier than formal and like, everyone who comes gets a bid."
Like, they thought informal was like the activity fair where you walk up to a club's info table, sign up, and you're in.
Little do they know that many times, informal is equally competitive because a chapter has 20 women rushing and 3 open spots.
That, and sometimes certain groups don't EVEN HAVE informal.

Exactly. We never held an actual open informal.

My personal favorite (as told to me by a friend who's daughter didn't get the "right" house and dropped out of recruitment..three times) "If you join abc no boy will date you. IN FACT boys have been known to leave a table and abandon the date if they find out the girl is an abc."
The mother said this to me with a straight face.

"They're new on campus so they'll take ANYONE just to get numbers!"
When my chapter did their first formal recruitment post-Colony, there was one girl in my Rho Chi group that kept calling TPA "the free spot" (as in Bingo). Then they dropped her.
Best part was when I got to biology after recruitment (we sat at the same lab table) carrying my brand new Theta Phi Alpha bag and she looked at it and asked "if I seriously got in" there!
There's no such thing as a free spot.

This was one of the rumors back in the day: "At xyz at Big Private U in LA, they go through your handbag while you are on house tours (each rush group did leave their purses at the entrance of each house, where the rush counselors watched them), designated actives while go through your bag, and run your credit cards through a computer, and check your family's credit."
And for the same house, at my campus:"xyz only invited back girls who had at least seven recs."
Also, (and this may not be an urban legend, but it is part of MS, and probably can't be openly discussed), "If you spend the whole party talking to a transfer student, you will be cut, because transfers are not allowed to vote on who is invited back."

Since you are talking about Big Private U in LA (and the Big Public University isn Los Angeles...since I transferred there) and I have more than a passing knowledge of the campus: Transfer students cannot be in the house until the first chapter meeting. If it is a year after transferring they are no longer transfers, but actives. The "transfer" students, if there are any, help recruitment in different ways....not by rushing.
So, no she didn't put a kibosh on the invitation....because she didn't meet you.

They would have been laughing at me...because I didn't bring a purse (this was still in the era when purses on campus were verboten)...and I had no credit cards until the last semester of my senior year. That would just show that my family is so awesome all I need to do is walk in a store and I get stuff.

This would never happen at 'Big Private U in LA' due to the fact that any fraternity man's questions when being introduced to a girl for the first time are; "What's your name?", followed immediately by "which house are you in?"
So it would never get as far as a date
