I come from a Northeast school that doesn't have a super competitive recruitment. It didn't matter what your parents did for a living. I was never asked. Your dad could be a doctor or a ditch digger; your mom could be a lawyer or a stay at home mom. What mattered was you.
That's all fine and good, but not terribly realistic at some schools. If they have questions about your ability to meet your financial obligations, it can work against you.
