Caprica and Stargate Universe cancelled

The oh-so-lovely powers-that-be over at SyFy (what a stupid name for a channel) have decided to pull the plug on Caprica and Stargate Universe. 5 more episodes of Caprica, 10 more of SGU, and that's it. Apparently, some of the SGU cast found out by Tw!tter.

I'm not terribly upset about SGU - I much preferred SG-1 - but I'm really annoyed about Caprica. There are so many loose ends that it will not be possible to wrap them all up in 5 episodes. I guess they weren't performing as well as some of their other programming, but still - ugh!!

Frak the SyFy execs up the ass with a splintery flagpole.

I'm disappointed because the less science fiction on TV the less scifi or specfic gets made. But I wasn't watching either show anymore, they couldn't hold my interest.

I gave up on SyFy (& the handful of other non-network channels I watched) and canceled my satellite service a year ago. Haven't missed it. I swear, these stations are run by idiots who must be catering to even bigger idiots, as far as I can tell.

BIG OL' SADFACE. I guess we can add those to the pile of "great scifi shows that shouldn't have been cancelled"

My friend let me introduce you to a website that will bring you to reality.

http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/

The ratings were horrible for Caprica.

@ DSTRen.

Same site.

^^^ The ratings rarely consider online streaming, Netflix, on demand, DVR or iTunes downloads. Now, these things aren't bringing in the same money for the TV stations, so as a measure of advertisement that's fair, but it's unfair in considering the actual number of fans.

Also, more niche shows are never going to get reality reflected in Neilson ratings since they're a small sample of viewers.

That said, Syfy has sold its soul to WWE and cheap B movie knock offs/sequels. If the point is you can make more money that way, well fine, stop pretending to be worthwhile. . Their (current?) head came from Oxygen or Lifetime or somewhere and has professed her own distaste for science fiction, so I'm hardly hopeful. The networks have begun to add more scifi/specfic programming but it's not geared towards the geeks. It is the best we have without the BBC involved though.

Give me the Syfy channel and enough money to secure the rights and even if I have NO new content, you'll get to watch reruns of Star Trek, Babylon 5, Farscape, SG-1/Atlantis, BSG universe, Twilight Zone, etc. for the rest of your life.

Exactly because advertisers don't care that people are watching shows that they can fast forward through commercials. As for DVR, there is final ratings that comes out that has same day and 3 day which takes DVR into consideration, but they don't go into the final decision as much because of the fast forward through commercials.

As for niche shows, it seems AMC got it right with The Walking Dead. Posted a 3.0 for its season finale.

Did you know that CSI NY has higher ratings than Glee, but it costs more to advertise on Glee than CSI and CBS is actually considering cancelling CSI NY?

Why because Glee has a higher 18-49, the demographic that advertisers want to get at.

Nope isn't fair, but that's life when you are dealing with free TV. Networks gotta pay the bills.

Oh let me add this for humors sake:

The Five Stages Of TV Fan Grief

  1. Denial – “The show’s fine, it won’t be cancelled”; “They’d never cancel a show with a squinty jillion average viewers that wins its timeslot”; “They’d never cancel a show from JJ Abrams”; “The network executives love this show”
  2. Anger – “Why this show? It’s not fair, when reality crap continues to get renewed!”; “How can this happen to my show? “; “The morons who run the network are to blame!”
  3. Bargaining – “If they cancel this show, I’ll never watch anything on this network again!”; “If we send them bags of crap/sign internet petitions/barrage them with emails/perform other goofy stunts it will save the show!” “DirecTV will save it!” (oops, not anymore)
  4. Depression – “I’m so sad, why should I ever start watching a new TV show again?”; “If every show I ever like gets cancelled… What’s the point?”; “Maybe I should just stick to DVDs of old shows”
  5. Acceptance – “It’s going to be okay, it’s had a good run of seasons”; “At least we got the story wrapped up, unlike lots of other shows”

3 days doesn't begin to cover people who DVR though, my mom has weeks of some shows backed up and watches some within days, usually though she catches up on the weekends so Monday and Tuesday shows don't get consideration. Again this might suit for their advertiser purposes, but really I think it shows that the model is broken.

AMC has been doing very well, but much of that comes from building a channel audience with Mad Men and Breaking Bad (and others). Much like HBO does on the Premium side, AMC's been dedicated toward making good, high quality shows with broad appeal even if the premise is niche. I anticipate HBO's Game of Thrones to get a WIDE audience outside of your typical dark, medieval fantasy fans because HBO makes good, high quality shows and markets them very well.

Syfy's taking the lazy way out by dropping original programming in exchange for more giant snake movies. Unless we needed Anacondas 5 : Eaten Alive.

If it was an option, I would pay for just AMC, Showtime, & HBO. But it's crazy expensive to pay for all the channels I don't want and then have to pay extra for the channels I do on top of that. So until the people who create & distribute TV catch up with the way most people today (that I know, anyway) actually watch TV, I'll be sticking to my free antenna channels coupled with cheap Netflix.

Sure, but that would mean AMC would need to be like HBO and charge a premium fee.

Other than that, if it runs commercials then they aren't gonna change. They make more money off of advertising dollars than DVD sales/rentals.

Don't insult me by implying that I am not in touch with reality. When I said:

I acknowledged that network execs and powers-that-be pulled the plug because the ratings were not as good as they had wanted. They're running a business, and like any business, they want to make money. If they can't pull in the advertising dollars with Caprica and SGU, they're going to cancel them and try things like Being Human and "WWE and cheap B movie knock offs/sequels".

As a fan, however, I am annoyed and saddened. There's a good storyline going and there is no way they can wrap it up in five episodes.

I am not out of touch with reality. Reality just sometimes happens to suck.

There, there **Patting head**

Sorry your show is gone. Lashing at me won't bring it back.

Refer back to the Five stages of Grief. I know I was there when Undercovers got cancelled. Of course I went from stage one to stage 5.

I'm glad you made it to five after saying the execs at Syfy need to go frak themselves.
