As much as typos annoy me, I have read scholarly journal articles where the researcher(s), the scholarly referees for the article, and the editor(s) have missed a typo in the hundreds of words that they read. While embarassing, it happens in plenty of organizations' public statements and in academia all of the time. There are times where people are so boggled down with making sure they convey the larger point well that "ealier" slips through the cracks. While I commend proofreading that catches every glitch, it is hardly the end of the world. And I firmly believe that a system's spellcheck can be the devil which is why I proofread before and after doing an email or Microsoft Word system spellcheck.
