That's not what she meant. She meant that at this point, rock & roll is 60 years old and no matter how "new" your band is, there's probably a Keith Richards riff or a Tina Turner grunt in there somewhere. It's new to you because you're so young, but throw some youtube links of your "indie" bands on here and I guarantee you I'll be able to find someone who sounds like them.

Yep and emulating it consciously is okay if you acknowledge where your influences come from.

And I can say, " For every mainstream chart topping artist you listen to I can find a "indie" artist who sounds better, performs better, and has more raw talent then them". I never said artists can't have influences, I jumped in on the topic of people changing their style and sound JUST to make it big.


I am down to play though... Most of these were released within the last two years, and while they might not be exactly groundbreaking, they are a hell of a lot more interesting and fun then Gaga or Katy Perry.

FWIW, I am listening to XFM (a UK station) right now, as I usually am. I like the XX and I think The Gossip is way overrated. If Beth Ditto lost half her body weight and said she likes dudes now I think that a lot of their critical appreciation (as well as a large part of their audience) would evaporate.

Yes, they have a Paul Simon/ World Music sound but they aren't clones. They have their own thing they bring to the table, and they are cool. Paul Simon is not cool. This isn't a thing of,

"well Buddy Holly used a guitar solo in his song, so every artist that uses a guitar solo is copying Buddy Holly"

I'm just saying that the claim that there's no new bands making the scene so Lady Gaga or Katy Perry is all we have, is false.

The examples I posted are very mainstream acts, but are yet not played on the radio. I'm just trying to show that there are other options.

I'm not sure what you guys are looking for in NEW. Do you want someone to invent a new instrument or something?

Did anyone actually say that? I think the basic argument was that Katy Perry and Gaga are just reincarnations of past pop singers/acts. Not that they're the only people putting out music right now.

But don't think of them as the best that's out there, or that they are popular because they are actually really talented. I think this topic is getting muddled by different points, I jumped in to talk about artists altering their music for mass appeal and the so called dying music industry.

I like watching films that make me think...sometimes. I occasionally flip to the Sundance channel when using my parent's house for their digital cable. But a lot of the time movies are escapism for me, and I LIKE watching stupid, pointless movies that make me laugh or feel good for two hours without much effort. Same with music. There's a place for "selling out"...it's entertainment and that doesn't make it less valid than "indie" music. My iPhone has music that is completely across the board and I listen to all of it, from local bands to Gaga. Art isn't just about angst and drama, it's also about effecting a reaction in the consumer and I never have and probably never will understand why just making people happy isn't as important as making them scream about their dark inner angst.
