Everyone knows you only diss the boss when you're not working for him anymore.

I think what irks me the most is that he (and/or his advisors) gave an interview to the Rolling Stone. It's not like Jann Wenner hasn't turned his music magazine into an agenda-ridden political outlet.

General McChrystal is very popular with the troops, and supposedly there are big "things" about to happen. This couldn't happen at a worse times. But, he knows the military code honor. I wouldn't be shocked if he's riding a desk for the rest of his career, nor could I defend it.

Dittos.

McChrystal was wrong to speak in the way he did. He should have resigned first. At that point he would have been free to speak his mind.

He breached the uniform code of conduct for a soldier. Case closed he should be fired whether he was right or wrong in what he said. It just doesn't matter.

I have to agree with you, but I don't think it will happen. For someone so high on the foodchain, how in the world could he be so stupid as to say those things in front of a reporter? Monumental! He must really think he's untouchable.

For some reason, I believe he knew exactly what he was doing and meant to do it. I don't believe the man is stupid and precedent dictates that you do not do what he did without facing the consequences. Douglas McCarther was fired during the Korean War because he crossed Truman and since that time others have been forced to step down because they could not support the Commander in Chief. Obama has to fire him or he will lose what little credibility that is left to him. This is the hill in which he (McChrystal) wanted to die on, IMNTBHO.

I haven't received my Rolling Stone (I do have a subscription) yet so I will be interested in what he really said.

The bolded assumes that Obama doesn't have much credibility now and YMMV on that. However, I can see equal criticism if he does fire a general in the middle of this war. He didn't say anything that bad, but it was improper and shouldn't have been done. The "you will attend this meeting in person by flying halfway around the world and screwing up your sleep" + a good dressing down would be sufficient.

My bet is he returns, then after the pull out in Iraq, comes home to a desk job and retires quietly while someone else takes over in Afghanistan.

I actually now think he will resign and Obama will accept. I just read on MSN that McChyrstal did this before and Obama forgave him saying it was the Head of the Joint Chiefs fault (Mullans). You don't get to screw up twice.
