One of the replies in this thread indicated I'd asked a similar question in 2001. In that thread, there was an article which indicated that in 2001, Hank Nuwer had said there had only been 2 deaths in sororities in his research. (and as was pointed out in this thread, it was said prior to the drownings in Southern California that weren't NPC). So probably I misremembered going through the appendix of Broken Pledges. Finding my copy (or someone else's) is the next step.
As for writing a book on the subject, there is no way that I could improve on Hank Nuwer, so I'm not going to try.
