In the for what its worth category - Mike Neismith and Peter Tork of The Monkees knew how to play their instruments prior to the show as they were musicians in NY. Davey Jones and Mickey Dolenz were actors who could sing. Mike Neismith wanted the Monkees to tour but Mickey Dolenz said that he couldn't play the drums. Reportedly Mike Neismith told Mickey Dolenz that "he was an actor so act like you can play the drums". That is what Mickey did and they toured the U.S. in 1967
Their original opening act was, believe it or not, Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix was often booed off the stage and had bananas thrown at him. He quit the tour after a few shows.
My vote:
The Who - great live in the early '70's
The Beatles
The Doors
The Rolling Stones - one of the worse live bands I have ever seen
