And about growing up in a different time, since you're college-aged, I'm going to guess your father and I are the same generation (Baby Boomers, latter half of the Boom). That growing-up-in-a-different-time excuse is the one my parents (depression-era Southerners) used about their parents (the grandchildren of Confederate soldiers). Sorry, but it's a lame excuse to make for anyone who's not closing in on at least 70 now. That's not a comment about your father; it's a comment about what you've said about your father.

My parents are 70 and it's a lame excuse even for their cohort.

They have seen and experienced a great deal in their lifetime and only socially and mentally isolated people (educated or not) would keep using "the old way" as an excuse for what I think the OP is alluding to.
