Rare fraternity live recruitment

So there's a little back story to my recruitment. I go to a sec school and personally I was not interested in greek life at the beginning of the semester. However my father is really big on it. President of alumni in the area, goes to events and retreats etc. Plus I'm from Jackson ms, so going greek is a must if you're from there. At the beginning of fall semester I pretty much already knew which fraternity i was going to be in. Talked to them all summer, went ot a couple of their parties they already felt like brothers before school started. So i go through recruitment, I go to this house exclusively, i also bring my best friend who wasn't big on greek life but came out anyway. So to make a long story short bid day came around. I of course recieve a bid but my best friend doesn't. Literally right before i sign my bid, i casusally ask them why my friend didnt recieve one. One of the guys simply told me because he's arab and some of the alumni wouldn't like it, but he was a pretty cool guy. I was beyond furious. I end up getting into a big arguement with some of the brothers for this blatent racism. I call my dad, he and some other inluential alumini come to the house to discuss the matters. After about an hour and a half of talking to me they still won't change their minds because "thats just how things are, around here". My own father agreed with them. So i didn't sign my bid and was simply disgusted by the thought of greek life.... But throughout the semester I was actively recruited by 3 to 4 fraternities who all seem pretty cool. So i decided to give it one more shot. Also my dad offered to buy me a new car, if i gave his another chance, so of course i can't pass that up.... Side note after reading stories on here in my opinion fraternity recruitment is harder because your arent shuffled around to every house, you actually have to go out of your way and meet the guys. Anyway wish me luck here are my top 5 so far without going through recruitment, maybe more will be adeded later we will see.

Red (Dad's fraternity)
Blue (Uncles's fraternity)
Green
Orange (My favorite so far, actively recruited me)
Black

I like this idea.

Good luck, I'm interested to see where this goes...

Once you go Black, you never go back. ;)

To greek22: There are SEC fraternity men - and others - on this site who might be able to figure out exactly where you are rushing and which houses from what you post (even with code names). As such, be sure to be discreet when discussing your rush experience so as not to jeopardize your rush in any way.

Best of luck and I look forward to hearing more.

Not to mention the possibility of figuring out exactly who greek22 is, given the references to his father, his best friend and the declined bid.

Perhaps it would be best to wait until rush is over before sharing the story?

Good luck!

Only if he wears pink sequined panty hose.

Forget rush, you should wait until pledgeship is over.

The only thing that's obvious is you inherited your character and sense of values from your dear old dad. New car > racist brothers > your best friend

Seriously? If I heard my chapter or any chapter I was close to was pulling this kind of shit I would descend upon like the wrath of God. Instead he is agreeing with them? Great role model.

Yeah the fact that you are even considering joining a group that would shun somebody you are close to just for the color of his skin is kind of icky.

Sorry I don't mean to get offensive but please don't make comments about my father. He grew up in a different time and this is a "traditionally southern fraternity". With regards to my value system, the only reason I am considering them again is because of the expectation my dad has. I owe it to him atleast to reconsider them. This fraternity is a big part of his life.

And hometown.

Good point. Many fraternities have a second vote prior to initiation regarding membership. If anything you might happen to say in this thread rubs any of the brothers wrong, it could hurt you in the long run. Especially if it only takes one "no" vote.

Not to be offensive either, but you did bring it up as part of your backstory. You can't expect people not to react to that.

That all may be true, but you also pointed out that your dad offered to buy you a new car if you give his fraternity another chance, and because you said you can't pass that up, your father's expectations can't be the only reason you're considering them again.

I'm not trying to argue with you, but if you don't want folks to share their opinions with you on subjects like those, you should carefully weigh what you type before you type it.

All that said, I wish you much luck at rush and hope you have a good experience. I've been to your hometown several times, as my husband has family there- it's a very pretty town.

Gusteau 01-25-2010 07:50 PM

I'm not defending/attacking anyone, but I just want to point out that we don't really know what happened during this chapter's membership selection, there may have been a legitimate reason they did not extend this man a bid that they didn't feeling like sharing with Random Legacy #5...
