Non-Black members in BGLOs?

So I am very new to this forum, and this is the first question I must pose. I am a white female and I just recently became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporate.

Since crossing, I have met a lot of discord at my school because our line had two non-Black members. One female, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., went far enough to say "NPHC is only for black people"

I do not want to start a fight, I simply want to discuss this and see how people feel. Is this really how most people feel?

Then you might try leaving the names of other organizations out of your post, especially when it's irrelevant to your point.

Although it's irrelevant to the point, the organization she mentioned does, in fact, have a white national board member. So at least it's ironic that she would be told that.

Curiousity - Which board member? http://www.aka1908.com/present/leadership/ doesn't have pictures.

Also, see the Ebony Magazine (December 2000) article on the topic at

Since Folks Always Want to Bring Up AKA...

To be real and succinct, it is an attitude that you are going to find in members in every organization, including your own. (Be sure to come and post in your sorority's forum when that happens ) Do most people feel this way; probably not. But how can any of us say for sure?

My question is are these questions that you considered before you joined your organization?

Did your sisters prepare you for the reality that you would face these kinds of perspectives?

You will, I am sure, face these attitudes, on occasion, for the lifetime of your membership. You need to figure out how much you are going to let these occasional encounters color your experiences with your sorority.

LOL

NonBlack NPHCers are not hardly as common as the Internet would lead people to believe, even for Sigma and Zeta.

If you joined with a lifetime commitment to service with a central service community of Black and African diasporic, why the HELL are you thinking about anything other than enjoying your NEW membership and doing the service that your membership process prepared you for?

IRL i've met a handful of NonBlack NPHCers, but a good portion of that handful were Hispanic. It's really funny because its usually the majority, Black membership that create all their hype.

That's why this topic is really a nontopic to me. LOL.

I just posted in Sen's thread about the white AKA board member and this is what I was talking about. Why did the OP join in the first place? Because the Zetas on her campus are cool and they accepted her? Did she take a look at Zeta's mission and purpose before joining? If so, how did she reconcile that with her life and how did she articulate her commitment to the vision of the organization to the members of the chapter?

All rhetorical questions, of course, but questions I would ask if a similar situation occurred in my own organization.
