That's why I said depending on the campus. It would never fly at my chapter of initiation (and I personally think they do look tacky) -- but those outfits would fit right in on the campus where I advise (one chapter wears camo t-shirts and leggings every year).
I was just saying I think advisors should mostly let the women in the chapter run their own recruitment, unless they are planning something utterly ridiculous.

Well, it is Western Michigan (not too far from where I live) and recruitment is in late September. So, I'm thinking white shoes are a no-no. Even tank tops in late September seems out of place to me.
But along the lines of what you said, ellebud... Looking at the picture, the shoes are screaming "look at me" instead of helping me focus on the girls' faces. Maybe it wouldn't be such a distraction in real life, but it certainly jumped out at me in the photo.

I think it probably sounded better on paper than it came out looking. Either that, or they're as sick to death of wearing black anything as I am.

I just think the high heels with tank tops just doesn't look good. Maybe if they had nicer tops on.

This is what I was thinking. From the waste up, they look very summery/beachy. From the waste down, they look like they're ready to go out for the night. If they had nice white shirts on (even if they were just cute, collared, short-sleeve shirts), it'd look a lot better.

I love the yellow polos the Sigma Kappas are wearing in a few pics.

I agree, that's why I don't like those shoes either. I'm totally against the whole "no white after labor day" rule. In smaller doses and if it's done tastefully, I think it's perfectly fine to wear white after labor day. This, however, is NOT a good way to do it.

I'm not even going into the white shoes, because with many recruitment outfits, white shoes work.
These are beautiful women, and I don't think the outfit does them justice - at all.

To be honest, looking at the picture again, I think they MIGHT have pulled it off if:
- their jeans were longer (almost to the floor) and not skin-tight
- they were all wearing shoes similar to the ones worn by the third girl from the right
If the jeans were longer, only the front of the shoes would have been showing, which wouldn't have been so bad. And the shoes on that particular girl are probably the closest to matching the shirts, in terms of how "non-formal" they are.
Still, it wouldn't have been my first choice... Especially for fall in Michigan.

I thought the same thing. I thought they looked great, then I scrolled down and saw the shoes. When I see white pumps, I think of a 1980s hair band music video.

Along those lines, members of a sorority at a university in Milwaukee often wear these t-shirts that say "We've got the best tacos in town. Join XYZ." While I don't know if they actually wear these during recruitment (I actually have no idea how recruitment even works at that school...I've just seen people wearing the shirts), I can't help but wonder why that didn't catch the rush advisor's eye.

The rule I'm thinking applies is "Match the shoes to the hem," because this would still look off to me if it were the middle of summer.

You're correct: the proportions are off. Tight pants are shorter, low ankle length. If they are longer they bunch up. (Think Audrey Hepburn). Straight leg (or fuller) pants cover most of the shoe so the break is correct.
