and whoever came up with that internet speak is a hot mess. its one thing to shorten words, but to put "ii" and "y" ad "ee" in all sorts of places, then take letters out - its obnoxious, and i feel like that in itself is like learning another language (written anyway, more like a dialect?)
my mother texts me in that speech. its ANNOYING. everything is "i c u l8r" and "im cumming now." really mom? really?

Well, WE know it is not a homonym but people from the south who pronounce our and are the same way think that they are homonyms (and interchangeable). I can't quite explain it.

Thankfully I have never seen anything that bad on a college level. I would retire in that moment. I did however work in this college prep program once where I had a student that insisted on writing Da for the .

The issue I've seen most often these days is homonyms in writing. "I love are new couch." "Their going to the mall to get and apple." It is mind boggling how many people have issues with common homonyms. It is also amazing how many there are in the english language. Continuity is also a major issue. I've read many a story or paper that starts out in one tense and then switches to another and ends in yet another. I also see so many people who can't spell. (Inless, emitate, imulate)

My 9th grader does this. He has gotten better because I ride him on his grammar and spelling. Parents need to be vigilant because teachers either can't or won't get to this level of detail. Hopefully, now that he is in high school, the teachers are a little stricter and hold the kids more accountable. I will continue to do my part, though because I will not have my son go off to college unprepared.

Wait. Someone said that she didn't actually finish in May and only walked. I guess they were right because she still knows what's going on around campus.

I just edited an article by a sister with a master's degree. It was painful.

Me toooooo!!!! My cousins do that ALL the time. I can barely read what they are trying to say.
And I was glad to read the article about Biden's comment. Honestly, I had never heard abut that remark. Unfortunately, I hear the articulate "compliment" quite a bit. I remember one day in a class the teacher was trying to get us to think of a word to indicate going down a hill in a quick manner. So I said "careen." There was this huge gasp from the white folks. Later several of them came up to me asking how I knew that word. Annoying. Then one of them said, "you're not like the other Black people I know. You're really smart and articulate."

This just makes me sad. lol. Please say that her masters has nothing to do with communications; though I don't know if that would make it any better.

I think a great many people have gotten the articulate comment. I get it from all people. Black, white, Asian, African. All of them. I'm not bothered by it because, well, I am articulate and well spoken. The fact that the person who is giving me the compliment is shocked about my abilities makes me pity them because either they're not very intelligent themselves or they know very few articulate people who resemble me and in that case I know they've been deprived of some great conversations and friendships.
Commas, though useful, are not the only way to punctuate a sentence. Most often they are not even the best way.
Some people don't realize that Microsoft Word will not fix all errors. If you use the wrong word MSW will not tell you unless you spelled it wrong or your word choice creates a sentence fragment.

Its in HR. Funny thing is that she is very well spoken. There is a huge disconnect between her written and oral communications skills.
