Class during recruitment!?!

When I went through recruitment, the rho chi's told us that if we had class we should go - school is the most important. This was terrible advice. Every girl in my group who skipped parties for class got cut from those chapters. Luckily, I chose to miss one class to go to recruitment and I am so glad I did. It sounds really bad, but it IS only one class and you can easily get caught up the following week. I also hate skipping class but it's worth it so you maximize your opportunities.

I agree, to an extent...I think it depends on the class and what the attendance policy is. If it's a lab or something, that's probably not possible, but if it's a lecture, then it's usually more lenient. Most professors are NOT understanding if you tell them you are missing a class for recruitment at Big Ten schools, in my experience. You just need to decide what your priorities are.

I'd be cautions about the part I bolded. If this is a condensed class equaling 3.5 hours and you believe that you may have to miss it twice during the 1.5 week recruitment time-period, that would be equal to skipping the same regular/daytime class consistently for two entire weeks during what, an 10-12 week semester! Just think of all the material that will be covered, assignments that may be issued, and tests/quizzes you may have to miss. You should definitely check with your recruitment counselor and Greek Life office and go with their recommendation based on the recruitment climate at your specific school.

My school's Panhellenic works with PNM's who have class during recruitment parties. They will do a split party schedule for them.

For example let's say Philanthropy night parties are 1 hour long. A PNM has some kind of scheduling conflict and is not able to attend a 1 hour party for 8 chapters. They split up her schedule, so she visits two chapters in that one hour period. The sorority is made aware of the arrangement prior to the PNM showing up and is prepared for it.

Your Greek Life office/Greek Advisor should be able to tell you if they make such accomodations.

I emailed the membership vp and she was very helpful.
It does look as though I'm going to have to make a choice about classes (my school doesn't do the split parties though that sounds like it would be so helpful.
With her help though, I feel like this will be an easier & less stressful decision for me to make.
I am getting even more excited as it gets closer to recruitment!

This is my opinion on it. If you are wiling to put sororities over classes, when you aren't even a member of one, how will it effect you if you do cross. I guarantee these kind of conflicts will happen again, and you need to figure out early which is more important to you.

I remember having this discussion on GC about a year ago. I agree with your stance (the purpose of college is graduating, not rushing -- my org and my council is set up to accomodate that), but there are a bunch of organizations that want you to show up to these things or face getting cut/not getting a bid. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

We only do informal recruitment, which is what I guess would be considered to be COB for NPC, but we always set events to happen after night class if they are at night.
