Class during recruitment!?!
I have a one night a week 3.5 hour class and our recruitment is super long...like a week and a half (monday through the next week's thursday - 1 day orientation, 3 days open houses, 1 day first rounds, 1 day break - for football games, 1 more day first rounds, 2 days second rounds, pref night and then finally bid day)
I do not like to miss class at all, and I know I can get excused from recruitment... I'd be missing a day of open houses and a day of 2nd rounds... I am really worried that is going to hurt my chances since I will not be there to make an impression (esp during second rounds) and was wondering, does the greeklife office let the sororities know that the girl is missing because of class? I just feel like with my luck I'm going to miss out on the chapters i'd like to have a chance with because since it is such a big school with large greek life and the girls are rushing about 600-700 girls i think on average that i'll get lost in the crowd...plus I'm a sophomore and worried I may be pushing my luck even to start off if i'm missing recruitment Anyways, just mostly wondering, do your schools let you know if a girl is missing because of a leqit reason like class and if so I know we cant say exactly why anyone gets cut, but do you still try to keep those girls in mind if they make a good impression in first rounds, etc? |

Every school handles absences differently. At my school, Rho Chi's would let us know if a PNM was going to be absent for class. Whether we wanted to invite that PNM back was up to us. We weren't obligated to keep them or cut them. Every sorority is different. We can't really say if a chapter is going to invite you back if you miss parties because every chapter makes decisions differently. |
When I went through recruitment, the rho chi's told us that if we had class we should go - school is the most important. This was terrible advice. Every girl in my group who skipped parties for class got cut from those chapters. Luckily, I chose to miss one class to go to recruitment and I am so glad I did. It sounds really bad, but it IS only one class and you can easily get caught up the following week. I also hate skipping class but it's worth it so you maximize your opportunities.

Something to note:
At some schools, PNMs can be released from recruitment if they miss class in order to attend a recruitment event. I'd strongly suggest checking to see if your school has such a policy before you decide to skip class for recruitment. |
I'll def check to see if there is a policy.
The thing with this class is that since it is one night a week only, there are quizzes every week. I just found an email address for the person we're supposed to email about it so I'm just gonna stick it out and see what she says about it. I understand that sororities have no obligation to keep/cut and it's up to them. I just wondered if for the most part the chapters were notified. If I have to miss recruitment I'm going to try my best to just make an awesome impression when I am there. |

My school's Panhellenic works with PNM's who have class during recruitment parties. They will do a split party schedule for them.
For example let's say Philanthropy night parties are 1 hour long. A PNM has some kind of scheduling conflict and is not able to attend a 1 hour party for 8 chapters. They split up her schedule, so she visits two chapters in that one hour period. The sorority is made aware of the arrangement prior to the PNM showing up and is prepared for it. Your Greek Life office/Greek Advisor should be able to tell you if they make such accomodations. |
Thanks for your help guys!
I emailed the membership vp and she was very helpful. It does look as though I'm going to have to make a choice about classes (my school doesn't do the split parties though that sounds like it would be so helpful. With her help though, I feel like this will be an easier & less stressful decision for me to make. I am getting even more excited as it gets closer to recruitment! |
I'm glad you asked this quesion. My daughter has been stressing about this too. She doesn't have recruitment until next month and during the first round she has a lab. She was going to see if the professor would let her attend another lab session.

I'm glad you're on your way to figuring it out... don't forget to check your syllabus. If this class meets once a week, you probably get very few skips. You may want those skips to spend with your sisters or you may NEED them later in the semester due to illness, family emergency, huge paper. IME, the consequences for missing classes that are this long are severe: withdrawn from course, dropped a letter grade, etc.
I'm a fellow PNM, so I can't speak on the missing recruitment aspect; but from a purely academic standpoint, I've seen friends go to the end of the semester with no skips and seen it wreck havoc. Keep that in mind when making your decision. |
Don't skip class. You're at college to learn, and your first priority should be your classes.
As others have suggested, talk to your rho chi (or whatever they are called at your school). If nothing else, she can try to make sure most or all of your second round parties are scheduled on the day you don't have class (if you don't have a full schedule), to minimize the number of parties you'd be missing while you're in class. |
