The average American doesn't know squat about Arabian or Japanese (or Neverlandian for that matter) culture, and that didn't seem to mean a hill of beans.

I would argue that point. I know a lot of people who have at least heard of the story of Alāʼ ad-Dīn, and the Cave of wonders. And for Mulan,a large part of it was them trying to get back on China's good side. And Asian Americans in general are a lot more in touch with their history then other ethnic groups.

My point was that Disney movies are not made for Historians. Otherwise, Pocahontas would have been a huge flop.

oh agreed. I never argued that. But Disney tries a lot for name recognition and if they can't get it they try to appeal to the people in some other way.

The little girls in my family are just excited to have another Disney princess to watch. Ariel, the mermaid, is by far their most popular Disney princess. But they love playing dress up and pretending to be any of the princesses, including Mulan, Jasmine, and Pocahontas. So I am glad Disney continues to add more diverse princesses! I would also love to see Disney have a spanish or latino princess.

It would be interesting to see how they would do that I think, because it is hard to think of what they could do for that.

They could come up with an original story...

Oh, wait, this is Disney we're talking about. Nevermind.

Ditto. I can't think of any Spanish folk tales, but I am sure there is something they could use from Aztec/Mayan/Incan culture.

I was thinking the same thing. But first off, there isn't much to admired about those cultures. Yes they were advanced, but they were also incredibly bloody. Second while we do trace our heritage back to various tribes and nations that were here before the Europeans, we all have our own individual cultures, even if we are both descended from the same group of people.

Hmm... and you want them to do an African princess?

Why don't they do a Jew princess just so they can cover all 'em.

Just wow, because no other cultures on earth ever killed or sacrificed people, or did (perceived) horrible things? How is the Aztec and Mayan human sacrifice better or worse than burning or drowning alleged witches in Europe and colonial New England? The people who conquered the Aztec, Inca, Maya, and everyone else in the Americas were not shining paragons of how to treat people either, and destroyed many people and societies in the process. There are still problems today from what happened five centuries ago.

How about a Disney Princess movie about real American royalty, Queen Liliuokalani of Hawaii?

Are you serious? There aren't too many cultures that haven't, at least at some point in their history, been incredibly bloody. Considering the Disney movies that have been set in Medieval and Renaissance Europe that have managed to gloss over the blood and guts and all other general nastiness, I am pretty sure they could polish and pretty up pre-colonial American history enough to make a movie that wouldn't have any of that in it either. (After all, they've managed to do it with post-colonial American history. As others have stated, accuracy is not the goal here.)

There's a not very PC joke to be made here, that I'm going to refrain from making. But y'all get the picture.

Such an ignorant thing to say.
