I think a person can be in a time period that they existed in.... We know Sawyer saw Kate one time and he would have been on the island just running around, so for a few seconds two Sawyers existed at once.

During the flashes, there was a scene where the "Flashing Sawyer" saw Kate assisting Claire with childbirth. She's saying Sawyer existed as the person watching the flash and as Sawyer who was somewhere on the island during the original childbirth.
