It may be a difference in opinion on the matter, but should is not unrealistic and dishonest. At one point slaves "should" have been free. At one point black people "should" have been given equal rights. The things that should be typically arent unrealistic and dishonest. They are difficult to get people to go along with because they require a change of the status quo. Its much easier to think of all boys in baggy pants as thugs regardless of their character because you've been doing it for years (and you're conditioned to do so). Its much more difficult to not be judgmental and lump people into groups. Imagine if you had to suddenly assess each person on their character and merit regardless of what they're wearing. God forbid! The horror!
Not true. My parents did not have an issue with the way my siblings and I dressed. We wore the popular 80s and 90s hip hop trends. However, the hookers and thugs themes never resonated with us so we didn't partake in them. <---- Did the thug style resonate with a lot of others? Was it very common? Did a lot of others wear it and buy into it? If they did then you and your siblings were not the norm/average. Thus you arent the you I am refering to. I probably should have been specific to say that when I said you I meant the people who followed the popular trends during their youth that were unpopular to their parents/adults.
We aren't simply typing about styles of dress and whether people find them pleasing to the eye. It has already been established that we aren't just typing about that. We're typing about the meaning behind looking like a hoodlum and those who confuse that look with being "hip hop." Or whatever excuse otherwise good kids are using these days.
|
I am well aware that style of dress particularly the "thug/hip-hop" style leads some people to believe that the person wearing it fits a certian stereotype. The issue is that some people (typically young people) believe that this should not be the case. What I wear does not define who I am. I make the clothes, the clothes do not make me. As such, people should be able to assess me for who I am and not for what I wear.
Will they? Probably not. Should they? Yes.

With the thugs. When Naughty by Nature made prison jumpers cool, they didn't become a big trend for most of the teens. That trend was mostly popular in the 'hood and in videos. Not at school. I wasn't in the 'hood. There were some baggy trends like Kriss Kross that the kids followed. Adults hated that. But they didn't hate it because it was hoodlumish, aside from the pants hanging really low factor, it just looked dumb and unnecessarily rebellious. LOL.

Exactly.
And just as the way you dress doesn't make you, it doesn't make "blackness." This discussion began because he tried to speak on how "black people dress." We wouldn't have cared if he was just talking about himself or some folks.

I think it has become painfully obvious by now that this DeltaDevil guy is not the brightest highlighter in the pack. Thus for him to speak about blackness or how black people dress would not bring forth anything worthy of consideration. We all know that there is no one person who could define blackness so there's no reason to even engage in the ignorance that is this DeltaDevil boy. I didnt address his comment because as far as I was concerned he was talking about himself and his excruciatingly small sphere of existance and frame of reference. Since he's been told more than once to refrain from making comments of that nature again nothing more needed to be said about it. My issue was with the thought/opinion that the idea that people should be judged based on who they are and not what they wear was somehow dishonest or unrealistic. I did not agree with it and said so.

Not at all. I happen to judge people based on their character. His appears to be seriously lacking some key components. He is illequiped to deal with me.

I can't do an Oscar Proud head. The square-ish shaped head with dinner plate ears. Can't do it.
I also don't do impatience. In his attitude or body language. If you're always huffing or slouching like a little kid not getting his way, then you're out.
