I dress in what i personally like. Im not a big fan of ties and suits therefore I dress in gym shoes pants that are a little bit baggy and t shirts. I have no problem with a parent putting some type of input on what a child wears, but they should also allow that child to pick out what they want to wear unless the child is mentally incapable of doing things on his or her own.

As for the part that i put in bold, I dont care what a person has on long as what they say is true or worth listening to. Clothing doesnt make up a persons knowledge on different subjects.
It doesn't matter if you don't really act like a thug. Your dressing like one will make society think you do.

Like everyone said, you're thinking like a 19 year old. I'm sure it'll change once you're older.

If that's the case, good luck having people take you seriously in the real world.

Off of clothing though? Why not just take a person seriously based on what they have to say or what they do instead of the clothing. Im tired of this "the clothing makes the man" mentality, but o well in time we will see if what you say turns out to be true.

Look up "cultural capital."

Then look up the relationships between cultural capital, human capital, and social capital.

Because LIFE DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT...people's first reaction to you is your appearance...and if you look like a thug ESPECIALLY BEING A YOUNG BLACK MAN in this world, no one will give a damn about what degrees you have, who your family is, or what you know...all you look like is the rest of the other men that are either locvked up, in jail or never set foot on a college campus.

People your age always hollering about "reppin' where they is from" well guess what?

Part of that is based upon first impressions!

You are in college now to get a career in whatever it is you want to get a career in, right? Well the first step is knowing that you can't always do what you want or dress how YOU WANT. Or better yet, look like the average homey on the street. Between now and the time you graduate, you will really learn that you have to step up your game especially if you want to live 'real life'. There is nothing wrong with a suit, some nice shoes and some clean underwear man!

You just wait...but you know...I am not going to bust on you too much any more because you are still 19 and you still want to have your fun, but you need to start prepping yourself now while you can because sooner or later, that thug look ain't gonna be cool on you when you hit 30 or 40 and you are still sitting there with a degree and no job and wondering why girls named LaQuisha flipping burgers with you at Mickee Dee's are the only types attracted to you...

I'm mad that I laughed at that part. I see what you are saying though.
