I find it interesting that the only commentary on the speeches last night had to do with style. Any interest in what was actually said?

Obama, true to form, reminded me of a fat person who is promising to go on a starvation diet. . . just as soon as he eats 8000 calories at Thanksiving dinner. I suppose that's why the Dow is down 150 as I write this, despite international markets being up overnight. People with skin in the game actually listened to what Obama said. He is promising huge increases in entitlements and spending. And the only increases in taxes will be on people making over $250K. Yea, right. He flat out lied about the stimulus package not having earmarks (remember Chuck Schumer's comment about the porky little amendments?). Sorry, the math just doesn't add up. $780+ BILLION for a stimulus package, $410 BILLION for an omnibus spending bill FULL of pork, a housing bailout, a car company bailout, Geitner talked about another $2 TRILLION to stabilize the markets. Anyone have an adding machine? His talk of cutting the deficit is analagous to an exclusive store marking up merchandise 4x, then putting it on a 50% sale. Obama may cut the deficit, but only after he balloons it to unimaginable levels.

I do think the market will go up at some point, if for no other reason than the treasury is printing money faster than a drunken sailor can spend it. Of course, even if it does go up, the dollar won't be worth a plug nickel by then because inflation will have eaten up its value and foreign coutries won't be willing to fund our spending orgy anymore. I think, if Obama really believes this wll work, he is the one living in Happy Pony Rainbow Land.

Was I the only person who felt like Jindal was supposed to be the GOPs version of Obama?
The way he looks
The body language he used
The structure of his speech
The style of his speech
The content of his speech

Im willing to bet MC Stee-Lo was behind this one. I dont understand the new GOP leadership's idea that taking what is successful for others and immitating it will make the GOP successful. Epic Fail!

At many points while watching Jindal emulate Obama I realized that his attempt at Obama's educated northerner crossed with southern preacher/activist speech style is why he sounded like a Pre-K teacher. Then many of his comments seemed to me like him saying "We need to do what President Obama says we need to do, but do it our way puh-leeze!" The whole thing appeared...just desperate.

The delivery wasn't great, but what he said, I more-less agree with.

Then again, I'm a member of Jindal's party. I'm guessing you're not.

Bear in mind that what Obama and Jindal said was written by speech writers and tested on focus groups. It was anything but contemporaneous and it was anything but meaningful. These sorts of speeches serve one purpose only -- to win public support. These speeches are really a sideshow though, not really important at all.

Im not a member of his party. Nor am I a member of President Obama's party. I agree more with our president's party right now though. I was disappointed with Jindal's speech because there were not many clear, stark differences like those that used to exist. Jindal and the GOP seemed to be trying to emulate Obama more so than trying to give serious objective conservative solutions to the crisis we're in. Any good content that may have existed in Jindal's speech was so thoroughly diluted by his imitation that it was probably missed by many people and it was a waste.

That's not how I saw it at all - but then again, like Kevin, I'm in Jindal's party (and a big fan of his, at that), so assign any biases you wish to my interpretation. I agree with what he was saying, I just wish the delivery was better.

Also, Jindal wasn't "attempting" to be "educated." The guy is educated and pretty darn smart, which is a key distinction from "attempting" to appear educated.

I really hope the party isn't looking for its "Obama." There are a lot of us who, if we wanted Obama, we would have voted for him in this election. What we want is a smart conservative who's not going to tax and spend.

I can watch Obama and laugh at his speech style and how it seems so played to me at times, but Jindal's funny wore off way too quickly for me.

Ditto here to everything. I just think he was over-coached. I first remember seeing/hearing him last year during the Presidential primary season. I was so impressed with the fact that he answered every single question thrown at him with little to no spin or diversion. He always seemed to say exactly what he meant and very eloquently.

Perhaps he is just better suited to unrehearsed discussion rather than practiced, teleprompter speeches. Opposite - in my opinion - of President Obama's style.

My personal beliefs on government are much more in line with Jindal's - the less government intervention into the market, the better. Americans, by and large, should be able to take care of themselves.
