I talk pretty freely too, but I think I occasionally think before I speak more in real life about how what I say may permanently affect my relationships with other people. It matters more to me in real life that a person has become upset or angry than it matters here. I care about other people's comfort; on GreekChat, I assume that if you're in the news and politics forum, you like to mix it up.

There's also a matter of risk that exist when we talk about race or class or gender in real life. Some people are interested in classifying others and treating them differently based on that classification. Here, there are very few consequences.

Describe to me what you mean by thinking before one speaks in real life?

I do not share your sentiments about the news and politics forum.

Be mindful of what you say on the internet, more often than not, it comes to bite you when you least expect it...

If you were someone I saw everyday, especially if you were someone that I saw everyday and liked, I wouldn't jump as readily to criticize your political or social opinions, especially without more regard for how I expressed my disagreement.

Since this forum exists for us to talk and debate about stuff, I assume that people are interested in debate and might even enjoy disagreement for the sake of teasing out and strengthening their own opinions.

I don't think I've ever said anything I'd be completely ashamed of online or anything (well, if I thought long enough, I'm sure I could think of something), but sometimes I post without considering things as much as I would if I were sending out a neighborhood newsletter.

I can think of a few times where the discourse between you and I has forced me to strengthen my argument, especially using my educational background.

I don't think any of those threads have involved the use of "sweetheart," "bitch please," or "go back and research it." And I know they haven't involved the use of "get over it."

I feel the same way, and that's why I come back for more.

I confess that I've called DS, "baby," I think, or something kind of like it. I think it was in the thread where he posted pictures of himself before the inauguration.

I think it upset him pretty badly.

I really appreciate your explanation and I thank you for it. I do agree that when we are with friends, we are careful not to overtly express our disagreements with their opinions. But what about the opposite, when a "friend" happens to be the ONLY representation of {insert your ethnic group here}... What about someone who is biracial or multiracial? And someone says something ignorant about XYZ person? When do I take this as "real"? Just asking?

And while people strengthen their own personal opinions, some people gain great insights and CHANGE their opinions!!! How can THAT happen on a message board? WOW!!! Moreover, this might be the ONLY place that some of people interact with someone of another ethnic group... Shocking, but true. So rather than us blasting each other, how do you think we can approach a more "shared" experience?

I think we do change our opinions, even if we don't post accordingly. Perhaps we should bump threads and note when we have completely come around.
