Here's the joke: The stimulus bill is a very long bill and no one seems totally sure exactly what's in it . There's a saying about if enough monkeys typed long enough they'd eventually compose any given text, here the stimulus bill. http://en.wikipedia.org<br />
/wiki/...monkey_theorem The bill is regarded by many as out of control.
There was also a chimp that attacked a woman and had to be shot by animal control. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukp...YnNMu17G6hMP4g
While it is known that Obama wanted the stimulus passed, it's pretty clear he didn't write it. I don't think anyone ever talked about him being involved in writing either the house or the senate version. Why would we assume the chimp/monkey in the image is supposed to be Obama?
Is your argument that Obama is black and ALL monkeys in cartoons are used to attack black people?
Sometimes a monkey is just a monkey.

And a spoon is just a spoon...
You mean the BEST you can do is recycle Sen's theory that I JUST disagreed with?
How dumb do I look to you?
Sweetheart...the coincidence of the chimp, the fact that OBAMA signed the bill the FIRST major bill he has signed in his admin, WHICH the media ATTRIBUTES to him not to mention previous 'monkey remarks' by those opposed to him and past works that Delonas has done that slam Obama makes it nearly impossible to see this as simply a passing joke.
There is NO reason that Delonas couldn't have thought this one out much better than what he did using the monkey in his work.
Do you have any idea at all how dangerous that connotation in that depiction is?
Any idea at all the history of how that depiction in this country has been used?
Let me start you off with one:
Google 'porch monkey'
It was unnecessary and unwarranted and the 2 stories that were unrelated.
Him mixing them together was simply asking for trouble no matter how much you want to put sugar on shit and call it candy.
Please, don't try to explain this again, you didn't say anything convincing.

So basically, any monkey in the media in any kind of political context for you will be intended to represent Obama?
That answers my question.

Since when is any of this about getting DaemonSeid's stamp of approval? And "sweetheart" is ironic coming from someone who is preaching about one of the "-isms."
I completely see both interpretations of this political cartoon and this isn't about right or wrong since we can't prove the intent of the artist. The NY Post is probably not shocked over the negative response because they know about racist images. They may have felt it was worth the risk to make the strong statement. Whether you're happy or pissed, you've seen this cartoon.

I don't think that's what he meant.
The primate in this cartoon was interpreted to represent Obama because he has been the "face" of this bill for the American public. I believe the caption read "I guess they'll have find someone else to do the next bill" or whatever. That caption could easily be interpreted as referring to Obama eventhough he is not the author of the bill.

I thought it was dumb and they should be embarassed to have put their name on it.
Starting with "this marks an era of new race relations" to "black history month" to "what would the Jewish community...."
It was classic OP/ED style but lacked substance.

I'm very concerned about this stimulus package and the affect it will have on us in the future because 1) it's only going to extend the inevitable and 2) it does our debt problem no good.
I'm also a little mad at this page:
http://www.recovery.gov/?q=content/investments
Could they really not increase the size of ALL the bubbles just a smidge so that the "$8 B" could fit in the littlest bubble? LOL

We, at the New York Association of Black Journalists, take offense to the New York Post cartoon depiction of two officers shooting a monkey and then saying, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill" The history attached to racial slurs connecting people of color to monkeys isn't new. In fact, the issue was brought up during the Obama campaign and clearly characterized by him as offensive. Yes, it is true that former President George Bush was often depicted as a monkey, but historical context is what makes this different.
How do you think the Jewish community would feel about the use of rats in any depiction of them? How do you think the Italian community would feel about being generalized with mobsters? Monkey slurs against Africans and African Americans go back to the days of early colonialism, when Anglo Saxon, Spanish and Portuguese conquerors used these types of drawings and descriptions to dehumanize black people so that their mistreatment and enslavement would not be viewed as wrong or sinful. The practice also took on more sinister roles later in history including during the slave trade here in the U.S. and in Hitler's Nazi Germany.
We, at NYABJ, demand both an explanation and an apology from Sean Delonas of the New York Post. We find it unconscionable that such a depiction, especially during this time, would be used in an attempt at humor or political satire. Would it be a leap to suggest that it is funny or ok to shoot the President, if this is who the chimp in the drawing is suppose to represent? We are not laughing.
We often hear Elinor Tatum, publisher of the NY Amsterdam News and Chair of the NABJ black media committee, say that incidents like this "underscore the need for more black-owned media in this country, to counteract the actions and insensitivities of right-wing or even so called mainstream media outlets." We could not agree more. Shame on Mr. Delonas and shame on Mr. Rupert Murdoch who has allowed something like this to happen.

LOL @ the bolded...for a number of reasons
@ the history lesson. If you think these educated people at the NY Post really need a history lesson then you need to realize they probably didn't and don't care enough to learn about and concern themselves with such matters. If the history lesson was for the reader then it's 2009 and supposedly a "new era in race relations" but we needed the NYABJ to teach us something.

I don't feel bad about the answer you've given.
If I though the chimp in the cartoon was supposed to be Obama, I'd agree with you about how horrible it was. Since I don't think it was intended to be Obama, I'm not outraged.
I'm a little surprised in how invested you are in being outraged by this, but that's how you roll a lot of the time.
